The Telegraph/JOHN BADMAN

Hellrung Park near Union Street and Central Avenue in Alton was a flurry of activity Friday afternoon as a trackhoe and two smaller tractors were busy landscaping the revamped park, which features a skate park, center, and new playground equipment. The new playground equipment replaced a gym set that was destroyed by fire in July. Utility poles, wiring, lighting, a walkway and child-decorated wall tiles still need to be installed. The park is scheduled to open Sept. 30.

For the past 30 years, Hellrung Park has been unusable. The park, like the surrounding Middletown area, experienced severe decline beginning in the 1970's. By 1985 the park was closed to the public.

Today, Hellrung Park is poised for a rebirth. The Alton Parks and Recreation Department has secured more than $400,000 in matching funding to rebuild Hellrung Park. The new park will help serve as a catalyst for new home construction in the Middletown and Hunterstown neighborhoods.

Weed & Seed's involvement at Hellrung Park is a component of our Neighborhood Restoration and Community Policing Committees which now meet together.

The Hellrung Park Project is a community revitalization effort. The Parks Department seeks, in conjunction with the Alton Weed & Seed Strategy, to raise $150,000 to match grant funds already awarded to the city. There are several ways you can participate in park revitalization.

Please consider:

Become a park sponsor - The Parks and Recreation Department is seeking ten park sponsors for Hellrung Park. Park sponsors will be prominently recognized on a 5-foot limestone marker at the park entry.
Hellrung Park Sponsor - $2,500 each

HellrungPlayAdopt a park feature - Six park features are offered for adoption. The donor will be recognized on a stone mounted bronze plaque. Only one donor per park feature will be allowed. Features offered for adoption include: playground, skate park, pavilion/amphitheater, community picnic shelter and basketball court.
Hellrung Park Feature - $5,000 each

Entry Plaza Brick Program - The entry to the park will be a brick and stone plaza. Two types of pavers are available. A 4" x 8" brick and a 14" x 14" granite stone.
Hellrung Park Brick - $ 50 each, Hellrung Park Block - $500 each

Memorial Tree Program - Fifty trees will be planted in the new park.
Hellrung Park Memorial Tree - $200 each
