ALTON ~ A visit last week by the city's Nuisance Abatement Task Force resulted in two Alton men being charged with four drug-related felonies.
On Thursday, the Madison County State's Attorney's Office charged both men Ray T. Slack, 39, of the 400 block of Jefferson Avenue, and Mark E. Gerhardt, 18, of the 500 block of Highland Avenue - with unlawful possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance; unlawful possession of a controlled substance; unlawful possession of cannabis with intent to deliver; and unlawful possession of cannabis.
A judge set bond of $75,000 for each man.
The charges allege that the men possessed and had intended to deliver more than 1 gram but less than 15 grams of a substance containing cocaine; and possessed more than 30 grams but less than 500 grams of cannabis with intent to deliver the illegal drug.
Alton Police Chief Chris Sullivan said Task Force members visited Slack's home on Wednesday. One of the men allowed police inside, where they saw drugs and paraphernalia lying in the open, Sullivan said.
Police took both Slack and Gerhardt into custody.
The Task Force is made up of law enforcement, building inspectors and animal control officers. Every month, members visit properties where they suspect there are code violations and drug' activity, particularly following up on tips from neighbors.
