76 year-old Alton man fights crime with camera
Alton, IL (KMOV) - A 76 year old Alton man and his camera are credited with helping catch a purse snatcher whose links to other crimes continues to grow.
Alton police say Sonny Taylor is charged with taking a woman's purse last week.
Through their investigation police discovered Taylor is also a suspect in the January 24th theft from a woman's car and an armed robbery of a pizza delivery driver in January.
Police also charged Anthony Stewart in the theft and armed robbery.
News 4 talked with the man who helped lead police to their suspects.
Others say he's fearless but James Meisenheimer says it's fear that drives him to take on shady characters hanging around his neighborhood of 37 years.
Meisenheimer did what he often does and snapped a picture of a teenager who he says had been lurking up and down the street looking into car windows.
Meisenheimer often puts himself in danger, and this is something Alton police warn against.
The 76 year old however believes he must take on people threatening his neighborhood because too many other people are afraid to speak up.
Alton police say they're grateful to Meisenheimer for his work and if all people put in half the effort he did, perhaps there would not be as many crime-ridden neighborhoods.
